Wintel versus the World
My previous blog on The Value of Open talked about the value of APIs and modularity. In the webinar “Carrier SDN – The ONF’s View,” Marc points out the dominance of the Wintel platform in the PC market over the last 3 decades. This is shown in the figure below, reproduced from slide 4 of the webinar at a time of approximately 3:52.
Some people have complained about the closed nature of the Microsoft aspect of Wintel. Marc points out that in fact Microsoft has crated a tremendous ecosystem of partners and apps, and that ecosystem has driven it growth. To the extent it has lost share recently it has been to a more open platform, Android.
Android versus Apple iOS
The figure below is reproduced from slide 5 of the webinar at a time of approximately 4:45.. it shows the mobile phone market share gains of Android versus Apple iOS over the last two years. Marc attributes this to the openness of the Android platform (along with no charge for licensing), and I tend to agree.
Closed Works, But Open is Better
Marc’s webinar and my blog both highlight the value of openness. This webinar provides some good historical support for this position. Going forward, openness is going to be increasingly important for building modern telecom services using cloud, SDN and NFV technologies.
