Following the 2012 introduction by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) of the Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional (CECP) individual certification program, Overture Networks embraced the opportunity to train and certify as many of our customer-facing professionals as possible.
In the words of the MEF, the CECP program is “for telecommunication professionals seeking to validate their expertise, skills and knowledge of Carrier Ethernet technologies, standards, services and applications”. Not all that different from the goals of other certifications in our industry, except this is the first one focused on standard terminology and frameworks unique to Carrier Ethernet networks.
This week, the MEF announces that it has certified the 1,000th Carrier Ethernet professional.
To mark the occasion here at Overture, I conducted an informal survey of some of my colleagues who suffered the classroom training or self-study and successfully passed the exam to earn the right to add CECP after their names. A small sampling of the comments I received:
“A correct understanding of MEF attributes is key to clearly suggest the use of our products and justify the moving from, say, MPLS to CE 2.0.”
“When [customers] see you using the right terminology and see you using the correct MEF standards it is a way to [earn] customers’ trust. For the more literate customer (MEF-wise) it is proof Overture knows what we are doing.”
Everyone I asked said that studying and using many of the concepts they learned in the training class and through self-study has helped tremendously in their interactions with customers.

I am proud that everyone on our Customer Support team has attained or is working to attain this important certification.
Likewise, in our global field organization, many of our Systems Engineers have attained CECP certification, and those who haven’t will be working towards that achievement.
In the future, you can expect that 100% of these Overture professionals will be card-carrying members of the CECP fraternity!
