Carrier Ethernet News 2011 SONET/SDH Displacement Survey White Paper

When will Carrier Ethernet displace SONET and SDH transport at the service provider network edge?

We have been searching for reliable information, but we have been unable to find a comprehensive study.  So we decided to find out for ourselves.  In conjunction with Carrier Ethernet News, we launched the first ever SONET/SDH Displacement Survey in May, 2011.

Given all the success Carrier Ethernet – as both a service and in the network infrastructure – is having in the market, we sought to identify the perceived obstacles that are keeping Carrier Ethernet from fully displacing SONET and SDH at the edge of service providers’ networks.

Well, with detailed responses from over 40 service providers, the results appear to reinforce conventional wisdom in some areas and in other areas appear to finally put to rest some earlier concerns about Carrier Ethernet.

First, we can report that service provider CapEx spending on Carrier Ethernet equipment seems to be overtaking spending on SONET/SDH in transport applications.  More than sixty five percent of the respondents stated that they plan to purchase less SONET/SDH equipment than they purchase Carrier Ethernet equipment in the next 18 months, with only fourteen percent expecting to spend more on SONET/SDH than on Carrier Ethernet.

We are completing the formatting of the final whitepaper, but you can reserve your copy today by completing the form below.  We will email the whitepaper as soon as it is ready.
