Carrier Ethernet over T1/E1 Edge

Overture 140 and 180

Cost effective Ethernet service delivery over T1/E1 transport

  • Reach all of your potential customers regardless of fiber penetration
  • Serve all locations of large multisite customers
  • Compound classification & queuing supports multiservice delivery

Overview

Extending Ethernet services to all customers over readily available T1/E1 facilities

It is estimated that only 15% of all US businesses today are reachable via fiber, while the remaining 85% are reachable only by copper (T1 or E1 connections). That why we built the Overture 140 and Overture 180 to specifically reach off-net customer locations easily and economically using existing T1/E1 lines. The Overture 140 offers highly manageable 10/100 customer access and up to four T1/E1s (eight T1/E1s for the Overture 180) for the network connection. These T1/E1s are bonded using either Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MLPPP) or PDH VCAT, offering up to 12 Mb/s (T1) or 16 Mb/s (E1) of service.

Flexible and Differentiated Ethernet Solutions

The Overture 140 and 180 provide economical point-to-point or, when paired with an Overture 6000 or other standards-based switches, hub-and-spoke Ethernet services to customer locations that can only be reached through T1 and E1 circuits. Offering business-class Ethernet services by providing strong Class of Service (CoS) features, the Overture 140 and 180 offer much more than raw Ethernet transport and can be used for:

  • Full range of 4,095 Virtual LANs
  • Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
  • Traffic prioritization and classification – Eight User Data Queues

For example, the advanced traffic classification features of either the Overture 140 or 180 can give Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic priority over Internet access traffic. Thy support up to ten rule-based classifications based on any of the following inputs: VLAN ID, VLAN P-bits, ToS bits and DiffServ Code Points. In addition to this classification scheme, rate limiting, policing and shaping are also provided to round out a full suite of tools for customer provisioning and service.

Easy Fit into Existing OAM&P Infrastructure

  • With an in-band management VLAN channel, robust GUI and full SNMP connectivity, the Overture 140 and 180 are easy to configure, manage and monitor.  Performance monitoring is supported for both the T1/E1 and Ethernet interfaces. The Overture 140/180 provide a comprehensive fault management through the use of equipment and facility alarms available over both the in-band management channel and through the local management console port.  SLAs can be monitored through the use of the Service OAM feature set (802.1ag and Y.1731) integrated into the Overture 140 and 180.
  • The Overture 140 and 180, combined with other Overture products, create a solution that enables service providers and carriers to create new business revenues by delivering high-margin Ethernet services to all of their customers, no matter where they are located on the network.

Applications

Carrier Ethernet Services over Any Infrastructure

  • Carrier Ethernet over T1/E1 and bonded T1/E1
  • Delivers a revolutionary way to reach 90% more customer locations with Ethernet services
  • Uses existing T1/E1 facilities and reduces leased access service fees
  • Standard MLPPP or PDH/VCAT bonding allows T1s/E1s to be added as bandwidth needs grow
  • Perfect for point-to-point and hub-and-spoke deployments
  • Plug-and play design — easy to configure; easy to manage
  • NEBS 3 certified

Most carriers today can deliver Ethernet services to their "on-net" customers where there are fiber drops from existing network infrastructures. However, only 15% of all US businesses today are reachable via fiber, while the remaining 85% are reachable only by copper (T1 or E1 connections). The Overture 140 and 180 are tailored to reach off-net customers easily and economically using existing T1/E1 lines. The Overture 140 offers highly manageable 10/100 customer access and up to four T1/E1s (eight T1/E1s for the ISG 180) for the network connection. These T1/E1s are bonded using either standard Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MLPPP), offering up to 12 Mb/s (T1) or 16 Mb/s (E1) of service. Additional lines can be added as necessary, and with a simple-to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI), provisioning new circuits has never been easier.

  • The Overture 140 and Overture 180 offer a full complement of management tools that makes it easy to manage and diagnoses network issues. The management tools  including remote loopback testing, as well as cable integrity testing to determine if subscriber-facing Ethernet ports or cables have failed. This allows providers to respond quickly to failures by taking faulty links or ports out-of-service remotely and restoring them when the fault is cleared. The result is significant savings from having to make costly truck rolls to each location for every fault.  SLA monitoring is also supported through the Service OAM (802.1ag and Y.1731) capabilities of the Overture 140 and 180.
