Overview
The Overture 8500 high-capacity MEF 18 certified DS1 pseudo-wire gateway delivers the same DS1 performance as an expensive TDM digital cross connect with the low transport costs of the packet network. Scaling to over 1000 DS1s, equipped with highly accurate adaptive timing and a built-in IEEE 1588v2 grandmaster. The Overture 8500 is the industry’s most cost-effective way to deliver large scale DS1s to businesses and mobile base stations.
The Overture 8500 enables wireless carriers, mobile backhaul and enterprise service providers to transition from TDM-based networks to Carrier Ethernet by transporting legacy DS1 services over Ethernet. The Overture 8500 delivers the industry’s largest scale, most cost effective high-performance DS1 circuit emulation gateway. The Overture 8500 aggregates over 1,000 fully resilient DS1 pseudo-wire (PWE) circuits with a CAPEX efficiency 3-to-6 times better than router-based solutions.
The Overture 8500 DS1 pseudo-wire (Circuit Emulation) Gateway was developed with in conjunction with leading service providers and is unique in three fundamental areas:
Richness of the feature set – The Overture 8500 provides a complete solution for high-performance DS1 circuit emulation for mobile backhaul, enterprise or infrastructure applications. MEF18/RFC4553 Structure Agnostic TDM over Packet (SAToP) encapsulation provides the lowest latency of any encapsulation method. The Overture 8500 scales to over 1,000 protected DS1s with a fully resilient architecture. Separate timing domains for all 1,000 DS1s ensures the same performance as SONET. MEF18 performance is enabled with either Performance-tuned adaptive timing or integrated 1588v2 differential timing.
Operational flexibility – The Overture 8500 enables customers and service providers to transition to Carrier Ethernet networks while continuing to support legacy DS1 applications. The Overture 8500 delivers MEF 18 performance with either 1588v2 or performance-tuned adaptive timing. Integrated 1588v2 timing eliminates the cost and complexity of managing a separate timing server. The Overture 8500 is designed with separate timing domains for every DS1, enabling multi-customer support in either infrastructure or wholesale applications.
Carrier class performance – As service providers make the shift away from SONET and SDH networks, it is critical that the Carrier Ethernet replacement is capable of the same reliable operation. The Overture 8500 delivers DS1s that exceed ITU G.824, just like SONET with no compromises in performance. A 99.999% availability fully resilient design with GigE Link Aggregation and SONET 1+1 delivers carrier-grade reliability. The Overture 8500 delivers MEF 18 performance with either adaptive timing and 1588v2 differential timing.
Applications
Business Services
The Overture 8500 enables customers and carriers to deploy solutions optimized for their growth IP/Ethernet services while continuing to support their critical legacy DS1 services. Delivering over 1,000 fully resilient DS1s with the same performance as SONET removes the barrier so that all applications can realize the economics and scalability of a Carrier Ethernet network.
Mobile Backhaul
Wireless carriers need the scalability and performance of Carrier Ethernet for 3G and 4G services combined with DS1 circuit emulation for the 2G services that remain at the tower for years. Aggregating 100s of towers for backhaul to the MSC requires a large scale DS1 circuit emulation gateway. The Overture 8500 meets this challenge with scaling to 1,000 fully protected DS1s.
Infrastructure Backhaul
The Overture 8500 enables network providers to deploy a Carrier Ethernet solution for all their infrastructure applications, while continuing to support DS1s for critical legacy applications. The Overture 8500 enables DS1s for Subscriber Loop Carriers, DSLAMs, voice gateway trunking, Class 3/5 voice switch trunking and SS7 circuits to be supported on a Carrier Ethernet infrastructure. A fully resilient 99.999% availability design and MEF18 performance just like SONET delivers the economics and scalability of a Carrier Ethernet network to these infrastructure applications.
